Spring 2008 Conference

NESA would like to extend a very special thank you to the Bridgewater State College Department of Sociology for hosting the conference — particularly Jodi Cohen, Walter Carroll and Particia Fanning, thank you for all your support and organizing efforts!

The 2008 Spring Conference, themed ‘The Immigrant Experience’ was held on Saturday April 19, 2008 from 9:00AM - 4:00PM located at Bridgewater State College’s East Campus Commons.

The one day program featured a variety of papers, workshops and roundtable discussions from academics, researchers and students. Discussions and presentations were centered around the keynote address delivered by Dr. Yvonne Vissing, Professor of Sociology at Salem State College. Dr. Vissing was presented the 2008 Sociologist of the Year Award for her contributions to the field of Sociology.

At Salem State College, Dr. Vissing developed the Center for Child Studies, heads up the department’s research program and is currently working to develop a graduate program in Social Policy/Public Sociology. In addition, she was appointed to serve on the Juvenile Parole Board for the State of New Hampshire and works closely with the National Coalition for the Homeless. Dr. Vissing’s publications include Out of Sight Out of Mind: Homeless Children and Families in Small-Town America, Women Without Children: Nurturing Lives, How to Keep Your Children Safe: A Guide for Parents and Finding Information About Children. Most recently, she completed a book exploring the sociological role of Santa Claus in children’s lives.
